New Health Insurance Fee For Research Sparks Questions.

The Church Agency

The AP (12/28, Alonso-Zaldivar) reports, “Starting in 2012, the government will charge a new fee to your health insurance plan for research to find out which drugs, medical procedures, tests and treatments work best.” While the goal “is to answer such basic questions as whether that new prescription drug advertised on TV really works better than an old generic costing much less,” the piece notes that “the idea of medical effectiveness research is eyed with suspicion.” Kathryn Nix, a policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation, remarked, “The more concerning thing is not the institute itself, but how the findings will be used in other areas. Will they be used to make coverage determinations?”

Healthcare Reform Law Already Affecting Millions

The Church Agency

Leading news from the National Association of Health Underwriters

USA Today (12/28, Kennedy) reports that “it can be difficult to dig through the rhetoric to determine just what the 2010 health care law has done,” but “proponents and foes say big pieces of the law have been enacted and have already affected millions of people’s lives.”

Don Berwick former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, remarked, “It’s complicated, but there are very many benefits affecting millions of people. They will not know it’s the Affordable Care Act, but it is.” The piece highlights “five major changes in health care that occurred in 2011 because of the health care law,” including a crackdown on fraud and more benefits for young adults and seniors.

7 Tips to Stay Safe from Drunk Driving/Drivers This New Years Eve

The Church AgencyThe Church Agency, not only wants you to have a festive time bringing in the New Year but also remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving. If we can educate people that buzzed driving is also unacceptable and will also cause  car accidents, we are saving lives.

Here are 7 New Year’s Eve safety tips:

1. Have a designated driver: Do not ever drink and drive. Ask a friend or a family member for a ride, or make a reservation for a taxi.

2. Monitor your alcohol intake: Many people associate New Year’s Eve celebrations with drinking. Be aware of how much you are drinking. Make sure you stay hydrated (with water) and that you eat enough.

3. Take the keys: If you have a friend who is too drunk to drive, take the keys. Get your friend a ride home with a trusted sober driver, or call his or her family for a ride.

4. Stick together: Going to parties, bars and dance clubs can be hectic, and with too much alcohol, some people lose control. Traveling in groups creates a safety net.

5. Stay off the roads: Drinking and driving car accidents are highest between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., so try and stay off the roads during those hours.

6. Drive defensively: If you must drive, be aware of your surroundings, drive defensively and call the police if you see anything illegal or suspicious taking place. As always, wear your seat belt and don’t drive distracted.

7. If you’re hosting a New Year’s Eve party, adhere to the following safety suggestions:

•    Have a ride for your guests: Contact a local cab company so your guests can have rides.

•    Juice, soda, water: Also serve non-alcoholic beverages for your guests. Have lots of water on hand.

•    Plenty of food: Make sure you have enough food on hand so your guests can have something on their stomachs beside alcohol.

•    Stop serving: Stop serving alcohol well before the party ends.

•    Sleep over: Let your guests stay the night if they wish to stay off the roads.

Happy New Year from The Church Agency, everyone. We hope that you will consider our suggestions this year and always remember to never  drink and drive! Let’s all look out for each other and have a great  2012.

POLICY DEDUCTIBLE INCREASES: THE SAFER WAY TO SAVE PREMIUM DOLLAR

The Church AgencyMoney is still tight for many Americans, meaning most are still looking to save when and where they can. Some people have even turned to their insurance policies as a place to cut costs. Insurance can be expensive, but consumers need to ask themselves where and how they can really save money in this area without jeopardizing the protections offered by their coverage.

Two typical places that many insured individuals think they can cut the cost of their premiums are from reducing the dwelling/liability limits on their Homeowners policy and reducing the liability limits on their Auto insurance policy.

In reality, cutting the liability limits on these policies leaves you highly vulnerable to risk and will not ultimately save you any money over the long run. Although you might save a few dollars now with such tactics, it really isn’t worth it when you stop to think about just how much you could lose if you were sued after someone was injured in your home.

If you want to decrease your premiums, a much more prudent way to do it is by increasing the deductibles in your auto and/or home policies. A deductible increase from $250 to $500 could save you up to 15% on your Homeowners insurance premiums. You can save 30% or more on your premiums by raising the physical damage deductible on your Auto insurance policy to $500 or $1,000 dollars.

Some consumers get nervous about not having the $500 to cover their newly raised deductible should they need to file a claim. Since the situation doesn’t involve thousands of dollars in difference, it’s likely to be just as difficult for most people to come up with $500 as it would be $250. The only difference will be that the extra premium savings can be saved and set aside to cover the higher deductible from any future claims. In most cases, the additional $250 could be saved in less than 24 months.

If you’re nervous about taking the larger leap to a $1,000 deductible, then you can always take a slow and steady approach. You might increase your deductible to $500 first. You can open a savings account for the premium dollars you’ll save each month from having a slightly higher deductible. Although it might take some time, you can eventually raise your deductible to $1,000 when you have saved $500 to $750 dollars in the account.

Unlike lowering limits, deductible raises can save you money without placing you at a greater financial risk.

Is Your Boat Insured?

The Church AgencyYour boat is probably one of your most treasured and valuable possessions. Unfortunately, a boat can also be vulnerable – to accidents, storms, and theft. In addition to giving you peace of mind, boat insurance coverage provides protection for you, your passengers and your boat.

Boat insurance provides physical damage coverage to repair your boat if it’s accidentally damaged or destroyed by a covered peril such as collision, fire, theft, windstorm, lightning or vandalism. This coverage is broad, and provides coverage for the boat, including its machinery and auxiliary equipment, outboard motors, boat trailer and personal property.

The Most Common Optional Boat Insurance Coverage’s:-

  • Personal Property: Cell phones, cameras and even personal flotation devices are often considered personal property on a boat. If a boat owner wants coverage for any of these items and other personal property they will want to consider adding additional personal property coverage to their boat insurance policy.
  • Fishing Equipment: All boaters know that fishing equipment is expensive and personal. To make sure one’s fishing equipment is covered adequately a boat owner will want to add fishing equipment coverage.
  • Uninsured boater: Getting hit by a boater carries enough problems but the problems get even worse when the offending boater does not carry insurance
  • Replacement Cost Coverage: This coverage will give a boat owner the full replacement value of their boat if their boat becomes a covered total loss under their boat insurance policy. The usual time period to recover the full replacement cost amount is three years.

Because of the special risks involved with boating, our policies also provide compensation for medical expenses, if your passengers are injured in an accident that involves your vessel, and liability protection, in the event that you are sued. LIFE INSURANCE THROUGH YOUR EMPLOYER MAY NOT ALWAYS BE ENOUGH

The Church AgencyAs you reach different stages in life, your Life Insurance needs change. Getting married and having children are just two examples of the kind of life-altering events that necessitate increasing your coverage.

One place people often turn to when they need more Life Insurance is their employer. You might already be covered under an employer-paid Life insurance policy. Many companies offer a minimal amount of Life insurance coverage as part of their general benefits package.

Don’t be lulled into believing that this is enough coverage. Typically these policies only provide coverage that is one or two times your base salary. According to The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE), most people need somewhere in the range of five to fifteen times their net income and sometimes even more. If your employer offers a buy-up Life Insurance option, you could always obtain additional coverage to supplement the employer-paid policy. There are two definite advantages to this approach:

  • There usually are minimal health qualifications to be approved for the group coverage.
  • The premiums are automatically deducted from your wages, which decreases the chance of missing a payment.

However, there are some other factors to consider before you buy coverage through your employer:

  • The type of insurance offered under the plan. Most employers provide Term insurance, which pays a death benefit only if you die during the life or term of the policy. Unlike Permanent insurance, the premiums you pay for Term insurance don’t earn interest, and the policy doesn’t build cash value.
  • The method used to calculate premiums. You need to determine whether your employer’s plan charges all employees the same premium, or whether premiums are calculated by age group, a practice commonly referred to as age-grading.
  • The status of your health. Employees with health problems who obtain coverage privately will likely pay more than they would if they purchased coverage under their group plan. However, healthy employees are likely better off finding insurance outside their group plan.
  • The inability to take your Life insurance with you when you change jobs. When you leave your employer, you leave your group coverage behind too. This is a serious consideration if you’re older because there is the possibility that your health could deteriorate in the future, which would make it more difficult and unaffordable to purchase coverage on your own. This lack of portability makes it a good idea to own some insurance outside your employer’s plan.
