High living had left Chicago grain futures executive Marc Thompson deeply in debt. In desperation, he torched his home for the $730,000 in Homeowners Insurance money. To make it appear a suicide, he led his 90-year-old mother, Carmen, downstairs, doused the basement with gasoline and tossed the match. Now Thompson’s own future is secure — for 190 years in federal prison.
Who would burn down his own home, not to mention kill his own mother, for the money? People caught unprepared for the worst recession in 80 years, that’s who!
“People in small but increasing numbers were burning down their homes,” says Quiggle. “Often the houses went up in smoke and flames just before the homes were to be foreclosed. People were upside down on their mortgages, they felt cornered financially, and, in acts of desperation, they burned down their own homes.”
Lost property claims also surged as the economy tanked.
“People would report their stereo stolen; maybe it was worth $3,000 but they claimed it was worth $8,000. Diamond wedding and engagement rings started seriously getting lost. That kind of crime that could net you a few thousand dollars became more prevalent than ever,” Quiggle says. – By Bankrate.com

AKRON, Ohio – The West Nile Virus has surfaced in Summit County, making it the ninth time a group of mosquito’s tested positive for the virus in Ohio this year, Bringing concerns for thousands of Health Care patients, as well as Health Insurance adjusters.
Judith Heasley knows how dangerous the West Nile Virus can be.
She said a family member spent more than a month in the hospital after getting bit by a mosquito carrying the disease just a few years ago.
“She recovered but she had a stroke, so there are a lot of side effects with it,” said Heasley.
She said she took notice when she finds out mosquitoes caught less than a mile from the park she took her grandson to Tuesday tested positive for the disease.
“It brings it a little closer to home,” said Heasley.
She said the mosquitoes are close enough to concern her but not a cause to panic.

The Church Agency takes pride in knowing their clients by name and enjoys building new relationships. Preventing disasters through education is another matter that my team and I take seriously. By sharing tips and advice to help protect against the unknown disasters in all our lives, The Church Agency can rest assure that more people will understand the realities of risk and will be smart about how to protect themselves, their families and their assets.
“I wanted to run my own business and I also wanted to be able to help people. I really felt protecting peoples from disaster was an important job. Over the past 27 years I have been involved in many claims that without insurance the impact would have been devastating to those who sustained the loss.
I have been underwriting truck insurance since 1986. I created a program for Motor Carriers to be able to offer group rates to leased owner-operators in 1990. At that time truck lines were facing audits from IRS challenging the independent status of owner operators for WC purposes. I created a direct bill program to the owner operator so the truck line could offer group rates in effect without being involved in the premium.
I also had the opportunity when getting into the insurance business to be trained in all lines of insurance by one of the major insurance companies. I think this really gave me the background to be able to run a multi-line agency. In 1985 I was awarded “Rookie of the Year” for this company and was awarded an agency. I was at that time the youngest agent for this company.
Our agency insures over 2000 clients and we are always meeting with new prospects. I am either on the phone or in a meeting with clients most days about half of the day. There is a lot of underwriting work that goes along with speaking to clients either before or after. Our loss control department is now getting very busy with Don Emch being full time at loss control / safety and I am involved in those initial meetings as well.”
The Church Agency has been in business since 1950 and has always maintained loss control philosophies to help clients with not only placing insurance coverage but also helping to reduce, transfer or protect against loss. We are a very giving agency being involved in many local charities.
“We believe in helping those that can and those that cannot. Both are a part of society, each given a different task.”

Ohio and Michigan, once longtime industrial titans, are the only two states whose economies shrunk from 2000 to 2010, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Passed by New Jersey, Ohio slipped from the seventh-biggest state economy in 2000 to eighth last year. Texas became the U.S.’s second-largest state economy during the past decade — displacing New York and perhaps heading one day toward challenging California — in one of the biggest economic shifts in the past half-century.
The economic winners of the last decade are states that focus on raw materials, government and senior citizens. The big losers are places that make things — industrial states and even California.
USA TODAY examined each state’s gross domestic product to determine how the country’s economic output has shifted within its borders.
The data, recently released by the bureau, reflect both population growth and income increases — in short, the economic weight of each state.
Ohio’s Economy was deep in the hole from losses in durable goods manufacturing — the production of items such as cars and appliances — and construction.
But the Buckeye State wasn’t alone in being dragged down from both those sectors. Other states capitalized on growing industries, something Ohio was unable to do at a level sufficient enough to overwhelm the loss of blue-collar goods and services in the economy.

A Nonprofit organization is formed for charitable, educational, religious, scientific, community development or other socially beneficial purposes. While nonprofit corporations are the most popular form of organization for nonprofit activities, unincorporated associations or trusts are also options to consider. The choice of entity may be necessitated by factors such as the longevity of the endeavor, the planned activities, the need to owner lease facilities and the need to hire staff.
Many people prefer to form a nonprofit corporation, in part, because of the liability protection a corporation provides. For example, if a nonprofit corporation is sued, the assets of its owners are generally protected because corporate assets are distinct from personal assets. Incorporating should therefore be considered if the organization will acquire assets such as buildings, equipment, or vehicles to be used in the delivery of services,or if it will be necessary to hire employees.
Finding the appropriate insurance solutions for Nonprofits and social service agencies can be problematic. The diversity of services, coupled with the extent of possible risk exposures, requires the expertise of an agency that can aggregate several different policies into one, affordable coverage plan.
At The Church Agency Inc., we are proud to serve the needs of nonprofit organizations and social service agencies dedicated to helping those in need. To that end, we offer a highly specialized coverage plan that can protect 501 Nonprofits and affiliated social service agencies. We can fold a number of significant policies to meet your organization’s needs, including:

As an agent I want to help my customers protect themselves and at the same time I know how hard it is to pay your bills, so saving money wherever you can is top priority. I have to advise my customers of the best ways to cut corners without cutting too much coverage.
With my experience in the industry the most critical coverage for a young family would have to be Life Insurance! Life insurance should be your first gift to your spouse. It says I want to take care of you even when I am gone! I am a firm believer that stay at home moms or moms working less than full time should absolutely have life insurance too. You don’t think of how much childcare expenses would be if you were gone.
If there was one thing I could say to new couples who are just starting out on their own, it would be…….Don’t buy direct! You need an agent to explain what you need, why you need it and how it will protect you.
I am a people person, I love to help people! I provide the service that I would want to receive. I get to be the calm voice that tells you everything will be okay, we have you covered.

The problem many enthusiasts face, however, is that getting behind the wheel of one of these iconic vehicles can be expensive due to high Classic Auto Insurance premiums. So how can classic car drivers get the right policy at the right price?
What Classic Auto Insurance Options Are Available?
As your classic car is likely to be among your most prized possessions it`s advisable to shop around for car insurance to ensure you`re getting a good deal. Before you do that however, you`ll need to understand the classifications used to categorise these older vehicles. They are:
- Veterans: vehicles manufactured up to December 1904.
- Edwardian: vehicles manufactured from January 1905-December 1918.
- Vintage: vehicles manufactured between December 1918 and 1933.
- Classics: typically manufactured pre-1974 although there can be exceptions.
- Cherished: collectible or rare cars that are five- to 10 years old.
Normally when comparing car insurance quotes you are advised to use a comparison website to compare deals from as many as 90 different insurers. However, not all insurers will offer quotes for classic cars, limiting your options. Indeed even those that offer cover may not provide the policy features you expect.
At The Church Agency Inc., we can customize our Classic Auto Insurance policy to meet your specific needs. Rare parts or rare paints, we can find a way of protecting your significant investment.
Contact us – or fill out an online request form – and let’s get your classic car covered.

One of the most alarming statistics I’ve read on motorcycles is from the National Safety Council. They estimate a motorcycle accident that causes serious bodily injury happens every 14 seconds here in the
Another point that opens your eyes is that according to the national Insurance Crime Bureau Statistics, 20-25% of motorcycles that are stolen are ever found. And motorcycle theft is increasing every year.
These two statistics alone are reason enough to see the important of having Motorcycle Insurance.
What does Motorcycle Insurance cover?
1. Liability – covers the costs of injuries to others who are on your bike or who are hurt from your bike hitting them. This coverage will also pay for property damage.
2. Comprehensive – covers the damages from fire, hail, tornado, hitting an animal, and of course, theft.
3. Personal Items – covers items such as a motorcycle helmet, leather and other safety apparel.
4. Medical - covers you in case you need a trip to the hospital by ambulance, or any post-accident physical therapy.
You can also find other optional coverage’s such as towing or roadside assistance in case of a breakdown.
What factors go into the rates I pay?
Insurance companies consider many different factors in setting Motorcycle Insurance rates. Some of the major points include:
1. Driving record/age – this is a big one. By keeping tickets off your record you’ll get the lower rates. Also, if you’re under 21, you can expect to pay higher motorcycle insurance premiums than someone who is 40, married and has an excellent driving record.
2. Type of motorcycle – rates for motorcycles under 1000cc will generally be less expensive. Also, rates on the high tech, “pocket rockets” will always be much more expensive them on a touring bike. The high performance bikes are built for one thing only, speed. You’ll pay higher insurance costs for it.
Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a casual rider, or a hardcore motorcyclist, our Ohio Motorcycle Insurance offers protection for you, your bike, and your accessories. Our policy is designed to meet the distinct personal and financial needs for a variety of motorcycle riders, despite your level of experience.

Ohio vehicle insurers and body shops say they’re busy in the aftermath of hail the size of golf balls that took a heavy toll on cars.
Mike Coleman at Centerville Body Shop in Southwest Ohio tells the Daily News up to 15 owners of damaged vehicles were waiting when the business opened on Thursday, the day after the storm. He says he’s never seen so many broken windows from hail.
State Farm Insurance says it received nearly 1,700 automobile claims in the Dayton area by midafternoon Thursday May 26th.
In northwest Ohio, used car manager Ed Jones at Reineke Ford Lincoln in Findlay says about 400 cars were damaged, nearly every vehicle on the lot. He tells the Courier newspaper the dealership will likely announce a ”hail sale” soon. – By Associated Press

If you live in Ohio, then you are well aware of the Natural Disasters that we face. Aside for making sure that you are equipped with the proper Homeowners Insurance coverage, ensuring your family’s future. Here are a few things to keep in mind when faced with a Tornado.
• A basement with no windows is the best. The safest place is under the staircase. If there is no basement, go to a small, centrally located room on the lowest level of the building such as a bathroom, closet or interior hallway.
• If you are in a vehicle, trailer or mobile home, get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building.
• If you are outside with no shelter, lie in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Do not seek shelter under a highway bridge or overpass.
• Know how to turn off water, gas and electric at main switches.
• People with special needs should register in advance with local emergency management agencies or police-fire departments. NOAA Weather Radio has alerting tools for people who are hearing impaired.
• People are advised to know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A watch means conditions are right for a tornado to develop. A warning means a tornado is occurring or is imminent.
• Assemble a disaster-supplies kit with a first-aid kit, essential medications, canned food, can opener, water (one gallon per person for at least three days), protective clothing, bedding, a battery-operated radio, flashlight, extra batteries and any special-need items. Important papers should be secured in plastic bags to keep them safe.

Not so long ago, Wedding Insurance might have qualified as weird coverage. Not anymore. Today, wedding coverage has become commonplace as the average cost of a wedding in the United States has grown to $29,000.
Fireman’s Fund has been insuring weddings since the early ’90s. “It protects the nonrefundable expenses, including cancellation due to serious illness, injury, extreme weather, a missing caterer or officiate — even a bankrupt event facility,” says Janet Ruiz, Fireman’s media relations manager.
Two years ago, Fireman’s added “change of heart” coverage for the bride or groom left stranded at the altar. There’s even a rider to cover the cost of professional counseling to help mend their broken heart.
But don’t let those Julia Roberts “Runaway Bride” images run wild. The coverage only applies if the wedding is called off 180 days in advance, and only covers money spent by “innocent party financiers,” i.e., the parents. Self-funding spouses-to-be won’t recover a dime.
Wedding Insurance, from The Church Agency Inc., is designed to make sure your hard-earned dollars are not wasted on last-minute reversals or unexpected changes in the weather.

Short of forbidding their teenage child to get their driver’s license, many parents feel there’s little they can do to avoid the high cost of Auto Insurance for their son or daughter. Granted, an automobile insurance policy that covers a new driver is likely to be expensive, there are things that can be done to help soften the financial blow. Parents need to be aware of what to look for before they start gathering quotes for Auto Insurance for their teen.
A safe driver is really the most important qualification of getting a great rate. This is why enrolling the child in a driving course is a great idea. Not only does it help lower the teen’s insurance rates but it also provides some peace of mind to the parent. If the child learns how to drive from a professional, they are much more likely to continue obeying the rules of the road which will ultimately result in lower rates.
Even though all kids dream of getting a brand new sports car for their sixteenth birthday, this isn’t going to help in the quest to find affordable Auto Insurance for the teen. A parent is much better off buying a used car and investing the money so when the child is old enough to qualify for a low auto insurance rate they can buy the car they really want.
Many teenagers have after school jobs and there should be an agreement in place that states that they foot part of the insurance costs. This not only makes it more affordable for the parent but it teaches the child about financial responsibility as well. With this approach the child will be well prepared to pay their own auto insurance costs when they go out on their own.

From a sudden cancellation to stolen gifts to a damaged gown, wedding insurance can help protect you against the unforseen, and can also afford you great peace of mind. But what exactly is Wedding Insurance — and how does it work?
Basically, Wedding Insurance protects a couple’s investment from circumstances beyond their control, and reimburses expenses incurred. For example, what if your limo driver doesn’t show up and you have to book another one the morning of the wedding — for three times the price? Or what if the groom’s custom-made tuxedo is lost in airport baggage, and he has to buy a new one the day before the wedding? What if your reception space goes out of business a month before the wedding, and you lose your deposit and have to book another space? These are the types of big-day financial losses that wedding insurance can help to protect.

The premium rate for a Life Insurance policy is based on two underlying concepts: mortality and interest. A third variable is the expense factor which is the amount the company adds to the cost of the policy to cover operating costs of selling insurance, investing the premiums, and paying claims.
Mortality – Life Insurance is based on the sharing of the risk of death by a large group of people. The amount at risk must be known to predict the cost to each member of the group. Mortality tables are used to give the company a basic estimate of how much money it will need to pay for death claims each year. By using a mortality table a life insurer can determine the average life expectancy for each age group.
Interest – The second factor used in calculating the premium is interest earnings. Companies invest your premiums in bonds, stocks, mortgages, real estate, etc., and assume they will earn a certain rate of interest on these invested funds.
Expense – The third consideration is the expenses of operating the company. The company estimates such expenses as salaries, agents’ compensation, rent, legal fees, postage, etc. The amount charged to cover each policy’s share of expenses of operation is called the expense loading. This is a cost area that can vary from company to company based on its operations and efficiency.

The Church Agency would like to share some insights from one of our agents.
We recently spoke to Michael R. Coudriet and this is what he shared with us regarding -being an agent -his rapport with his clients and -his take on the current needs of the elderly…
Regarding Michael’s position at The Church Agency…
“The toughest part of my job, as far as resolving my customers’ problems, would have to be the importance of insurance coverage vs. cost. This is a huge issue with a lot of people. Also, I just want to say that a big misconception the public has about insurance companies, is that they find ways to not pay claims, and this is untrue. A lot of the public also feel that their Insurance Agent does very little to earn their keep. This couldn’t be farther from the truth with our agents at The Church Agency. In fact, we go the extra mile to ensure our clients’ peace of mind and to retain their business, year after year. Having a unique relationship with all our customers is how we set ourselves apart. “
Michael has been with the agency for several years, here is something else he wants you to hear…
“After so many years, our clients are more than just people that we are selling insurance to, we become an integral part of their lives. I enjoy building a professional and trustworthy relationship with my clients. This often includes assisting them with their Business Insurance needs. When I advise business owners, I strongly suggest that they look into both Property & Liability coverage. We all know that a simple BOP policy is just not enough to address the possibility of disaster. So many of my Business Insurance customers don’t realize that they are at great risk by leaving gaps in their coverage. “
One last comment from Michael about how elderly people can protect themselves without going broke…
“I assist many elderly people in my area and I take their challenges very seriously. Most folks just don’t have the types of insurance coverage they need. In this hard economy, where prices are sky-rocketing and people are living week to week, its hard to ask them to invest in a robust insurance policy. It just doesn’t d make sense. However, I stress to my clients the need to maintain Health and Life policies that will actually help them keep costs down in the long run. I make every effort to properly assess my clients’ needs and find them the most adequate products to provide them security and give them a plan they can afford.”

Just how high will Ohio gasoline prices climb? It’s a question on the minds of many motorist as we head toward Memorial Day.
According to AAA, Cleveland has now set an all-time record high for gasoline at $4.055, beating the previous high of $4.044 set back in July of 2008.
The new high for Northeast Ohio gasoline is nearly 15 cents above the current national average price of $3.909.
The prices above are provided by the Oil Price Information Service, an independent agency that monitors fuel prices across the country.
